2003-10-09-08:34 #1914596Gondolom, egy kicsit még keresgél az ember, szûkíti a feltételeket, és arra is talál valamit 😀

Compatibility
We spent a great deal of time testing the compatibility between this board and Linux. We first started with our RedHat 8.0 installation which we have used in our past few desktop reviews. This installation booted fine on the standard Parallel ATA drive it was installed on but there were driver issues with the 2.4.18 RedHat kernel. These issues included lack of support for DMA on the disk drives, no detection of the SATA drives, no AGP support, and no support for the on-board Gigabit Ethernet. From here we moved on to installing out own custom 2.4.20 kernel. This didn’t solve any of these issues except for detection of the SATA drives which now functioned like the PATA drives with no DMA.
We figured that such issues may arise from a new chipset like this so we then moved on to installing the latest pre-release kernel, 2.4.21-pre7. This finally fixed the Ethernet issue and the DMA issue but we were still unable to load the kernel AGP driver without passing “agp_try_unsupported=1” to the agpgart module. Oddly enough, the SATA drives disappeared now that the drive controller was detected correctly. This may be an intermediate problem while they are still patching up to 2.4.21 stable.
As one more compatibility test, we then went to trying to install the new RedHat 9.0 from scratch onto a SATA disk. This started as one would expect, with the SATA drive not being detected. RedHat generally tries to be as compatible as possible with new hardware and included the ICH5 drive controller fix to enable DMA. In order to get around the problem of no SATA support we went to the board’s BIOS. In the BIOS we found the ability to turn the drives on Legacy mode which essentially rearranges the drives and sets some general compatibility in order for anything to be able to use them. This worked for RedHat 9.0 and we proceeded through the installation. Once installed, we found that we were back to a 2.4.20 level system in which DMA, AGP, and Ethernet were still not working. In one final attempt, we were able to get DMA working on an install onto a PATA drive without issue with RedHat 9.0.

Looking back on how everything went, if you buy one of these boards, expect to be building your own kernel, at least for the near future. Many fixes should come in the 2.4.21 kernel and, in turn, be integrated into distributions. If you don’t mind hacking it though, it won’t be too big of a problem.
One final word comes on the topic of the RAID functionality of the ICH5R. This board supports this functionality but as expected no driver currently exists to support it. Intel has informed me that they are working on a Linux RAID driver for this chipset but had no specifics on a time table. Hopefully this won’t take too long to complete and you will be able to add this board to the list of other “soft RAID” solutions that now work with Linux.
Promise 20376 oshoz!!!) drivert, akkor lass csodat mukodott.
Ja, es mindezt a /dev/sda -ra kototte be. Semmi append sor nem kellett.
sok szerencset.
2009-12-04-19:55 #1870989Melyik az a kernel, amelyik már támogatja az Sata-t?
Esetleg valakinek már van-e valami konkrét tapasztalata sata-s winyóra való telepítéssel?üdv
