Az új Xorg alapértelmezésben állítólag nem igényli az xorg.conf fájlt. De generáltathatsz egyet:

Bemásolod a szokott helyre a kapott xorg.conf.new állományt, aztán jöhet a hegesztőapparát.

_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: …SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets – Make sure an X server isn’t already running

ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log

Sajnos nem hoz létre xorg.conf file-t a fenti hibaüzit adja, el nem tudom képzelni, hogy hova lett a 9.10 -ből a xorg.conf továbbá minden létező hardvercsiholó felület.

1. ctrl+alt+f1
2. belépsz a felhasználóneveddel
3. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
4. sudo Xorg -configure
5. sudo cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
6. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

köszi szépen borbi, így létre tudtam hozni az xorg.conf-ot.
Sajnos a viszontagságok nem értek véget, a különféle leírások alapján az alábbi módon beírtam a file-ba a felbontásokat, de mit sem ér, az xorg.conf-ban szemmel láthatólag helyesen szerepelnek a kártyám adatai, driver stb.
újrindításkor újból csak 800×600 és továbbra sem ad ki több választási lehetőséget a beállító felület.
A fura egyébként az, hogy eleinte a 9.10 hozta az 1024×768-at de pár nap után elszállt ez a felbontás.

Lehet hogy 16 bit-es színmélységben megy, nem? Hiányolok egy DefaultDepth 24 sort a Screen részből.
