Hi Ben,
You can update the system with kpackagekit. You can find it in the menu in Tools/System tools (it is probably among the favorites of the Lancelot menu, as well). There you can see a „software update” option. If you click it, bP will be updated. In the Settings you can change the options of automatic update checks.

If you like KDE don't do that. Even if it is possible to install different environments, bP is designed for KDE.
