„Morgantown, WV, Mar 14, 2007 — SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC2 is available for downloading and testing. This release improves hard disk reformatting and Broadcom wireless support.

Warren Woodford of MEPIS tells the tail of MEPIS Broadcom support „In the past we’ve had pretty good Broadcom support as a result of working with users, but I felt we could do better by testing in-house. I’ve been on a quest for a Broadcom card for over a year, but every time I though I was buying one, it turned out the manufacturer had recently switched chips to another vendor.”

„About a week ago, a friend of mine picked up an AirPort Extreme Upgrade Kit for my main MEPIS development machine, a MacPro. This gave me an opportunity to test 6.5 with one of the very latest Broadcom AirForce chips. I found that the new chips are not supported in the released version of the bcm43xx driver and not supportable via older versions of ndiswrapper.”

Warren continues „To up the ante, it turns out that a couple of months ago, a long standing exploit, which would allow blackhats to take over a Windows box, was reported as fixed in the newest Broadcom drivers. I doubt if this exploit would work in Linux, but better safe than sorry.”

„RC2 contains an upgrade to the latest version of ndiswrapper which we have tested with the new drivers. In fact, RC2 was uploaded to the ftp server via the AirPort Extreme in the MacPro. Current users of 6.x who need this upgrade can get it from the MEPIS pools but they need to be sure to install the latest MEPIS kernel kernel, ndiswrapper, and ndiswrapper-modules.”

In other developments, as a result of tester feedback, RC2 replaces qtparted with gparted for more comprehensive formatting of hard disks. And the MEPIS Xconfig Assistant now allows easy selection of PS/2, USB, serial, Wacom, Synaptics, ALPS, and Appletouch pointer devices.

This week MEPIS replaced it’s primary ftp/rsync server, so downloads are expected to be faster and more reliable. i386 and amd64 ISO images of RC2 are available in the ‘testing’ subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber’s Site and at the MEPIS public mirrors.

Satisfied users are encouraged to make a contribution or make a purchase at the MEPIS store. User support helps offset the costs of producing this MEPIS release and funds further development of MEPIS Linux.„
