With RC1, SimplyMEPIS 6.5 Gets Its Final New Addition

Morgantown, WV, Mar 7, 2007 — RC1 of SimplyMEPIS 32 and 64 is available for testing. This release adds an improved MEPIS Network Assistant, the latest Alsa sound drivers, and numerous minor fixes.

Warren Woodford of MEPIS reports „The updated MEPIS Network Assistant adds manual configuration for WPA security as an alternative to the automatic configuration via networkmanager. And the release of alsa 1.0.14.rc3 includes support for new sound chips. Some MacTel users should see a big improvement with sound support in this release.”

Warren continues „Due to the hard work of the community, a serious issue with desktop performance was brought to my attention. Fortunately they also had the solution. It seems the package which synchronized the GTK theme with the KDE theme was using a lot of processor resource. When using Firefox on youtube with and without the package, I saw a difference of a factor of four. After I got over my shock, I removed the package from the MEPIS master images and proceeded to build a custom GTK theme for MEPIS. I’ve received numerous reports from users that Firefox appears to be much faster now.”

The MEPIS Beryl theme was tweaked to look more consistent with the rest of SimplyMEPIS. The package lists between 32 and 64 bits were compared and it was discovered that kino needed to be added to 64 bit. In addition, RC1 was tested to verify that it is ready for the Daylight Savings Time change on Sunday.

ISO images of RC1 are available for download in the ‘testing’ subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber’s Site and at the MEPIS public mirrors. Satisfied users are encouraged to make a contribution or make a purchase at the MEPIS store. User support helps offset the costs of producing this MEPIS release and funds further development of MEPIS Linux.
