SimplyMEPIS Beta 7 Has Latest Multimedia and 3D Support

Morgantown, WV, Feb 28, 2007 — Beta7 of SimplyMEPIS 32 and 64 has been uploaded for testing. This release brings together the recent SimplyMEPIS changes: updated mplayer and Firefox packages, as well as opt-in to try the Beryl 3D desktop and opt-in to use the NVIDIA 3D driver.

Warren Woodford of MEPIS says „First, I want to thank the MEPIS testers who have given so much of their time to investigating issues and suggesting improvements. With their help, Beta 7 brings it all together. We still have cleanup to do but this should be the final Beta. If Beryl 0.2.0 goes Final in the next couple of weeks, it should be easy and safe to include that update. Otherwise, we’ll go Final with what we have.”

In Beta 7, Beryl 0.2.0.rc2 is integrated to run in a KDE session. It can be ignored by those who don’t have 3D acceleration or who don’t want the 3D desktop. MEPIS Beryl can be run from LiveCD or USB key with most NVIDIA, ATI ,and Intel graphics hardware. It comes preconfigured to Just Work.

Warren cautions „Everyone should keep in mind, Beryl is in an early stage of development. Even ubuntu, which is a strong supporter of Beryl, has announced that they will not preinstall it in their next release. MEPIS includes Beryl so you can try it and see what the buzz is about. It should work pretty well for most users with recent hardware, but it may not work for you. If Beryl does not work well on your hardware, consider using MEPIS as a test environment, and help the Beryl team make Beryl better for everyone.”

Beta 7 also includes recompiled updates to the latest versions of Firefox 2.0, mplayer, mplayerplug-in, and the 64 bit nspluginwrapper. This has improved Firefox stability and video compatibility when playing streams, especially in 64 bit and in Beryl.

ISO images of Beta 7are available for download in the ‘testing’ subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber’s Site and at the recently expanded MEPIS public mirrors. Satisfied users are encouraged to make a contribution or make a purchase at the MEPIS store. Ezek szerint meg nincs beryl 0.2.0 final, fentebb rosszul irtam, sorry erte. Azt irjak, hogy az rc2-est integraltak a beta7-be, es ha zaros hataridon belul kijon a final belole, akkor azt integraljak is a final 6.5-be. De ezek szerint meg hetek vannak hatra a final-ig.
